Gluten Free... a whole new world.

Many members of our congregation have an allergy to gluten or have Celiac disease. This means a whole new way of life. As an example, we offer a gluten free communion! So, as a service to all, I thought we could use this blog post as a way of collecting information about where to buy gluten free food (inexpensivley) ...where to shop? Where to dine? Other helpful resources?

So.... post away!

What is Gluten-free SAFE and UNSAFE

Check out these word documents of ingredients to watch for...

 SAFE

UNSAFE

NOTE: These lists were put together by a member of Sunrise and are not intended as medical advice, just a helpful guide.

Things to Beware of to Maintain a 100% Gluten-Free Diet

Rice and soy beverages because their production process may utilize barley enzymes.
Bad advice from health food store employees (i.e., that spelt and/or kamut is/are safe for celiacs).
Cross-contamination between food store bins selling raw flours and grains (usually via the scoops).
Wheat-bread crumbs in butter, jams, toaster, counter, etc.
Lotions, creams and cosmetics (primarily for those with dermatitis herpetaformis).
Stamps, envelopes or other gummed labels.
Toothpaste and mouthwash.
Medicines: many contain gluten.
Cereals: most contain malt flavoring, or some other non-GF ingredient.
Some brands of rice paper.
Sauce mixes and sauces (soy sauce, fish sauce, catsup, mustard, mayonnaise, etc.).
Ice cream.
Packet & canned soups.
Dried meals and gravy mixes.
Laxatives.
Grilled restaurant food - gluten contaminated grill.
Fried restaurant foods - gluten contaminated grease.
Ground spices - wheat flour is sometimes used to prevent clumping

Where to shop

At one point, it was difficult to find GF groceries, but now you find them at King Soopers, Vitamin Cottage, Whole Foods, etc.

gf candy list

for those of you screening the halloween candy. here is a good list to help you out..  ALWAYS read labels... to be safe.

gf helpful website and info

www.celiac.com is a helpful website.   the best cookbooks are by bette hagman. you can find them at any bookstore.

Albertsons will offer a list of gluten free foods that they sell, so will whole foods.  Whole Foods has two freezer sections of gluten free bakery items to shop from.  I also shop online at miss robens for cake mixes. There also is a gf bakery called out of the bread box in old colorado!!

items to be leary of: any lip product, stamps, envelopes, vitamins, toothpaste, playdough, otc meds, prescription meds.. spices, any food that is processed.

i suggest the following restaurants in colorado springs-

Jose Muldoons (downtown) mexican. they have a gf menu on request. NEVER a problem there. They have celiac waitstaff there as well.

PF Changs, the Ritz, Outback Steakhouse have GF menus. Just make sure when ordering a salad at Outback they use a new bowl to mix your salad.... PF changs also sells a gf beer!

the best vacation place to eat with NO worries whatsoever is Disneyworld. the chefs will take care of everything including special events like wedding/bday cakes!!! Just book your meal at any priority seating restaurant. Disneyland is getting better, but does not have the organization that World has yet... it will happen very soon though.

when eating out- when in doubt order a salad with no dressing, no croutons, baked potato and ask for any vegies steamed with no spice. You can also ask for a steak/chicken/fish with no seasoning cooked in a clean pan or on a clean area of the grill. most places can help you. please stay clear of fast food restaurants, the cross contamination is the issue and most foods contain wheat.  i really suggest to anyone starting a gluten free diet that they eat ALL WHOLE FOODS for at least 4 months with NOTHING processed to help their bodies heal. just eat produce and meat.  anything in a box, can or bag is most likely going to make you sick.

Templed Hills Camp and Retreat center in Woodland Park will offer gf food for summer camp programs, retreats and family reunions. their staff has been trained by a celiac.  so send your kids to camp worry free!

if a gf support group is needed, please let Geoff know. we are working on having gf food at every main church event.  you can email me when a function happens that you wish to attend to ensure the food will be there. michelew@sunriseumc.com
