Give Thanks!

"Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever."  Psalm 118: 1

"Give thanks to the Lord, call on his name; make known among the nations what he has done. Sing to him, sing praise to him; tell of all his wonderful acts."  Psalm 105:1-2

"Be joyful always, pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus."  I Thessalonians 5: 16-18.

Giving thanks comes naturally to Christians.  Our scripture is filled with the thanksgiving of God's people.  And why shouldn't we be thankful?  We have a good, kind, gracious, powerful, righteous God, who saves us and loves us!

But, if you are like me, it doesn't hurt to be reminded on occasion.  That's the great part of our national holiday-Thanksgiving.  It reminds us to give thanks.

When I begin to remember how blessed I am, it changes the way I think and live and act.

Every night, just before I go to sleep, I try to think of three things that happened that day for which I am thankful.  Usually I'm asleep before I get to number three, but it sets the tone of a good and restful night.  You might try it some time.  "Give thanks to the Lord..."

And have a blessed Thanksgiving Day.

Marv Vose

P.S.  Church is a great place to give thanks!  As King David said, "Better is one day in your courts than a thousand elsewhere."  Psalm 84:10  See you in worship this weekend!

11-13-08 Sunrise E Letter

Dear Sunrise Friends,

The weather has been so nice this week, it is hard to believe that it is November.  But, it is!  Thanksgiving and the season of Advent are right around the corner.  More on that later...

This weekend in worship we will be having a time of blessing and anointing of our Children's Ministry staff members.  Come and be a part of praying for these leaders and our entire Children's Ministry.

We will also have the privilege of welcoming new members during our worship services.  Come and welcome them to Sunrise!

As always, the music will be uplifting and God's Spirit will be present as we worship together.

A big thank you to all those who have already submitted your 2009 Offering Card, estimating your giving for next year.  Your tithes and your offerings make our ministries possible not just here at home, but across the globe.

If you have not yet had a chance to drop off your 2009 Offering Commitment Card, you can bring it with you and drop it off during worship this weekend.  Make sure to pick up your special gift when you submit your card.  You can also drop it by the church office or put it in the mail to us.  It's not too late!  As we plan how to support our ministries in the next year, we need to hear from you.

We'll see you in worship this weekend as we draw closer to God through our worship!

Grace and Peace,

Marv Vose

Veterans Weekend.  Please wear your uniform !!  Alternatively, as we have done before, wear your ribbons.  We want to honor you for service to our nation.

11-07-08 Sunrise E Letter

  Dear Sunrise Friends,

It has been a busy week in our church and in our nation!  Regardless of your views on the outcome of the recent elections, remember that our mission as a church hasn't changed.  God still loves us and calls us to share that love with others.  God still cares for those in need and calls us to do the same.  God's Spirit is still moving.  God is still pouring out His blessings.  We are still singing and praising God.

Come join us this weekend for our Celebration Weekend!  We will be serving cake and coffee after each worship service to celebrate our stewardship campaign.  If you have not yet had a chance to drop off your 2009 Offering Commitment card, this weekend would be a great chance to do that.  We'll have a special gift waiting for you as you submit your card.  We will Soar! together.

We'll also be observing Veteran's Day during all of our worship services.  On Sunday at 9 & 10:30 am in the Sanctuary, the choir and orchestra will be performing a special tribute created and arranged just for Sunrise.

Also, don't forget that the November Communicator is now available on-line.  You can click on the word newsletter in the upper right corner of this document or on the link below for the latest information on what's up at Sunrise:  www.sunriseumc.com/files/November_Communicator.pdf

Looking forward to seeing you in worship this weekend as we celebrate and praise God!

Blessings,

Soaring!

We are off and soaring in our stewardship campaign!  What a great Gratitude Weekend we had!  So many of you completed your Offering Cards and turned them in.  Thanks so much!  But we still have much to do.  If you haven't completed your Offering Card, please keep praying and bring it to worship or send it to church.

If you have sent in your Offering Card, please pick up the gift from the church.  We have a token of appreciation for all of you and if you sent in your card, you wouldn't have had a chance to get it.  The gift is a pewter angel.  And while it is designed as a Christmas ornament, it is a great reminder of our call to soar.

In Isaiah 40: 31, the prophet says, "...those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength.  They will soar on wings like eagles."  With all of the economic difficulties swirling around us, his words are a great reminder.  We "hope" in the Lord!

You may want to place your angel in a place where you can see it often and be reminded of our call to soar.  What a great time to keep our "hope" in the right place.

Blessings,
Marv Vose

Please look in the bulletin for information about the Olan Mills photography sessions.  It's a great deal!

Don't forget to turn your clocks back one hour before you go to bed Saturday evening.  All of your Sunday worshipers should look refreshed and wide awake this Sunday!

Gratitude Weekend!

Gratitude Weekend is this weekend!  (Please forgive me for the wrong date on the letter you received this week.)  In spite of that error, this is Gratitude Weekend!  I hope you have spent some time praying and pondering God's blessings to you and your family.  When I carve out time to do that, I'm always amazed at how good God is to me!

This weekend, we'll have a chance to express our gratitude by returning a portion of God's blessings through an Offering Card.  You should have gotten an Offering Card in the mail this week.  Please make it a part of your prayer time, too.  It's an opportunity to say what you intend to return to God through your church.  Please bring the Card to church this weekend.  There will be a worshipful time to present this to God.  (If you forget your card, there will be another one available at church.  If you can't be at worship, please mail the Card to church.)

There will also be a small gift for you.  It is simply a way to express the appreciation of the church for your faithful support.  I know you don't support the church in order to receive thanks or gifts, but the church wants to present this keepsake as a way of saying how very special and important you are!  It really is a beautiful gift and one you will cherish for years to come!

So I look forward to seeing you this weekend in worship as we continue to Soar!

Blessings,

Marv Vose

Photo opportunity.  Olan Mills sign-up folders are in the Atrium and Café.  Free 8 x 10 photo.  You can decline to buy if desired.  Sunrise gets $5 for every family who views their free photo.

Soar!  (Even If the Stock Market Slides)

That's the topic for this weekend!  The stock market and the economy have been in the news and they have generated significant anxiety, worry and depression.  It has also generated lots of conversation among ordinary people, politicians and bureaucrats.  So let's talk about it this weekend from a Godly perspective!

What does scripture have to say about our current situation?

How do we as Christians deal with our current situation?

And how can you soar even if the stock market is sliding?

We'll talk about all of that this weekend!  I'll see you in worship.

Grace and peace,

Marv Vose

P.S.  At Briargate at 10:30, we'll have the children singing!  Don't miss it!

Angel Tree Callers Needed! Through Angel Tree, Sunrise provides Christmas gifts to children whose parents are in prison.   We need 20 people who will phone kids' homes to see what they want for Christmas.  We will train callers in a half-hour session in the theater between services, on Oct 26  or Nov 2.  Please fill out the tear-off strip in the  bulletin insert, sign up at the Missions Table, or call Richard or Diana Oliver, 282-8397 by Wed, Oct 22.

Hi Marv

Please let me know if this was what you were looking for.  I can modify however you need.  I agree I think placing this in a more prominent place would be beneficial.
