Dear Geoff Peters,
Yes, the best of saints can and do have fear despite the fact that they have put their trust in God. The Scriptures prove this. See the psalms....they are filled with saints who had fear, like David, and he was a mighty warrior, a very courageous man! Remember, he slew Goliath, while all of Israel's valiant soldiers were apparently afraid. At least, no one stepped forward for many days, before David did, and he did almost immediately.
"Is fear a sign of doubting God?" Technically, the answer is, "yes"! But, we're all human-even the best among us, like David,-arguably Israel's best king where Scripture says of him that he did all that The Lord wanted him to "except in the case of Uriah the Hittite"
I say "technically" above; because if a wholeheartedly following saint of The Lord is afraid, they don't stay that way--they go to God--they cry out to God, trust Him, and rely on Him, remember that God is faithful and trustworthy, and that nothing is too hard for God, that God protects those who are faithful to Him, and that He is their security and shelter and find refuge in Him and under His wings, so to speak. They know God is not a liar, as man is, and that God comes through with all His promises, and will deliver the obedient saint from trouble and adversity at the appropriate time in God's eys. They know God will rescue them. (See psalm 91:5,15; Isa.41:8-14; Pr.29:25)
